How English Cert approaches assessment, scoring, and reporting across the six skill areas.
Understanding written texts and identifying information.
Communicating ideas effectively in written English.
Understanding spoken English in different contexts.
Communicating orally in English.
Understanding and using grammatical structures.
Understanding and using English words and expressions.
The skills included in an examination can vary by the assessment selected. Depending on the skills, learners may encounter multiple-choice questions, short answers, longer written tasks, listening tasks, and speaking prompts.
Sections may be timed, and the learner platform shows the instructions and timing before a section begins.
Each assessed skill receives a score out of 150. The overall score is the average of the scores for the skills included in the examination.
The report also shows the corresponding English Cert reporting level and the skill-by-skill breakdown.
Results are mapped to the English Cert reporting scale, which uses the CEFR bands A1โC2 plus supplementary A0 and + categories. The + categories describe learners who are stronger than one band but not yet at the next.
Read the level descriptions for what learners can typically do at each level.
Writing and speaking tasks may require assessment by the English Cert team using the published assessment criteria for the task. Where review is required, results are released after the assessment and any necessary review are complete.
The learner platform shows the status of an attempt and when results are available.
An approximate indication of current level to help choose a starting point. It does not assess every skill and does not certify.
Familiarisation with formats and question types. Practice does not issue an official certificate.
Assesses the selected skills and provides official results and certification when eligible.
English Cert reporting categories are aligned with CEFR descriptors and use additional + categories for finer reporting. A0 and the + categories are supplementary English Cert reporting categories, not official CEFR levels.
